Find funding

Helping you explore sources of funding
Following the production of an Evidence Development Strategy we will work with you to develop the studies that meet your objectives, timelines, and fit your budget.

There are a range of potential sources to fund studies and we can advise which would be the most appropriate to apply to, depending upon the aim of the study, timing, and amount of funding required.

Examples of funding sources include:
  • NIHR funding programmes
    • Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation(EME)
    • Health Technology Assessment (HTA)
    • Invention for Innovation (i4i)
    • Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB)
  • Technology Strategy Board
    • Biomedical Catalysts Programme (with MRC)
    • Innovation Vouchers
    • Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI)
    • Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs)
    • Smart
  • Wellcome Trust
  • Academic Health Science Network (AHSN)
  • Charities
The DEC works closely with the NIHR Regional Design Service North East (RDS NE) in developing applications for NIHR programmes and other peer reviewed sources of funding.

Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF)
Following the announcement in the Spring Budget,  Innovate UK will be inviting industry-led proposals within the first round of the new Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund.
The “Challenge Areas” are likely to include:
Antimicrobial resistance
Utilising new technologies and treatments to reduce AMR by 50%             by 2025/30
Innovation in health & disease detection using diagnostic,                     preventative & sensor technologies
Developing diagnostics and sensors that enable anticipation and             prevention of disease in the healthy, elderly and chronically ill. To             precisely diagnose and treat disease in the ill, to improve                             compliance with medication, and to enable independent living.

The NIHR DEC Newcastle and it partners would be very pleased to discuss working with firms or consortia planning to lead ISCF bids.
